Bowen Technique

Bowen is a relatively new therapy brought to this country in 1993. It was devised by Tom Bowen who lived in Geelong, Australia. He spent many years of his life helping people with his gentle, special moves. Tom wasn't a medical person but his family say he intuitively seemed to be able to read bodies when they were injured or unhealthy and always 'knew' where to do the moves. He started his working career as a labourer but he became so busy helping people with his treatments that he eventually gave up his labouring job.

He showed half a dozen gentlemen how he worked and they have now developed and brought this fascinating, effective treatment to this and many other countries.

Bowen is very different to other 'hands on' therapies in that the therapist does very little work, spending time out of the room between moves. This gives the body just enough input to encourage it to heal itself without the therapist imposing his/her will on it. This it does very effectively - in essence 'less is more'.

Bowen is classed as a light touch therapy where gentle rolling moves are made at specific points over muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is not massage nor is it manipulative, but as it connects with the whole body's energy system it is very effective at encouraging it to re-align and re-balance, thereby healing itself.

This makes it a gentle but effective alternative to Physiotherapy, Osteopathy and Chiropractic.

It is usual to be able to determine if Bowen is benefiting you by the time you have had 3 or 4 treatments, very often changes are noticed after only 1 or 2. The average for acute problems is just 3 treatments. The longer you have had a problem the more treatments you may need but with Bowen the response is normally fairly quick.

Once the benefits have been achieved time between treatments can be extended and as determined by the client 'top ups' can be arranged as necessary.

It is generally accepted that about 80% of people have a positive response to Bowen and again virtually all find it extremely relaxing.
